3rd Level

What is 3rd Level?

3rd Level is essentially a multiple filter. It allows you to add a third dimension to your study. Without it you could only ask, "what did respondents purchase based on marital status?". If you add occupation to 3rd level you can ask "by occupation, what did people purchase based on marital status?". The only way to do this without 3rd level would be to filter for each occupation individually.

Page Built From

You can either choose a 3rd level question (default) or study. You are restricted to one 3rd level question, but there is no restriction on the number of 3rd level studies.

To choose a 3rd level question, click on the 3rd Level tab on the right hand side of your question selection view, then click in the white area below 3rd Level question to make sure the questions appear on the left. Now you may select your 3rd level question. To choose a 3rd level study, click on the 3rd Level tab on the right hand side of your question selection view, then click in the white area below the Multiple Studies to make sure the available studies appear on the left. Now you may select your 3rd level studies.

Note: When you use a 3rd level question AND 3rd level studie(s) at the same time, you will be forced to view the results of all included studies as one. Make sure you have read the rest of this page to ensure that all of the possible respondents get included in these numbers. Also, it is usually best to have the most recent database as your primary study when using 3rd level studies.

If you are using 3rd level studies, some questions icons in your study may turn yellow or red. Yellow means that the responses to a question are different from one database to another, and therefore you must recode to turn the question green. Red means the question does not exist in your third level database, and there is nothing that can be done about that. Green of course means that everything has stayed the same and you can use the question without a problem.

Page Display

Although Columns Tiered Beneath Banners is the default and helpul in a quick export, I prefer Pages (Z-Axis) Above Banners. When you use Z-Axis Pages on a question like occupation, you get a neat little tabs saying for example Sales Work, Skilled Trade, Student at the bottom of a page with numbers filtered for each individual response on its own page. Switching between the formats may require you to juggle the questions around a bit, so as always pay careful attention to what is going on with the numbers and what they mean.
